For masks, it makes sense that they should work and multiple studies have


shown that they serve as an effective barrier in the lab. However, clinical trial that have investigated them have failed to show effectiveness in preventing disease. (Only one trial involved COVID-19; the others involved influenza-like illnesses.)

A university campus would be a great place for a randomized trial of mask effectiveness (particularly now that vaccines are in place to reduce the risk of severe illness). However, I don't think anywhere has the will to do one.
